We’re embarking on a new series of ”Simple Patchwork” by Craft South - and these patterns are exactly that.
The Story
The Shoofly quilt pattern is a variation on the 9-patch and originated around 1850. It was named after a wild plant called Clover Broom or “shoo-fly”. It is one of a few historical blocks that were thought to have been part of a “quilt code” used in the Underground Railroad to signal a path to freedom. The history is as compelling as the design is charming.
